Yes, chaplains are 100% confidential. SECNAVINST 1730.11 says that all direct communication to a chaplain is presumed to be confidential. Chaplains will not disclose confidential communication without the informed consent of the person who made the communication. 

What this means is a chaplain is legally prevented from telling anyone your information. This confidentiality extends to all matters. Even if you are suicidal, or have broken the law, a chaplain cannot share anything you tell with anyone else. The chaplain's confidentialiy is absolute, and a chaplain cannot be compelled by anyone, including a judge, to disclose information shared in confidence. 

2. Do i need to  be religious to see a chaplain?

No. Chaplains will provide you with care no matter your faith, or lack of faith. While a chaplain is available to discuss religion and spirituality, you don't have to. A chaplain will respect your beliefs and provide you with care no matter what. If you don't want to talk about spiritual things, that is totally fine. 

3. What faitih group is the 1 mcd chaplain?

Chaplain Shear is ordianed in the Presbyterian Church in America. This means he is christian, a protestant, and very specifically a presbyterian. If you want to know more about what that means, just ask!

4. What topics can I speak to the chaplain about?

Anything you want. The chaplain is experienced in providing counseling on a wide variety of topics including, but not limited to; marriage and family issues, depression and sadness, PTSD, work problems, substance abuse, addition, grief and loss, moral injury, and spiritual direction. 

5. How do I meet with the chaplain?
